Social Services and Recreational
Programs
Philosophy
The Recreation Therapy Department at Broomall Rehabilitation and
Nursing Center provides a variety of therapeutic program based on each
resident’s needs and interests. We practice a holistic approach to
nourishing the mind, body and spirit. We also believe that laughter is
the best medicine!
Programs and
Activities
Recreation therapy programs encourage restoration of self-esteem and
resumption of normal recreation and social activities. Recreational
opportunities can be adapted to compensate for physical and cognitive
limitations as they promote optimal participation. Residents are
encouraged to participate in physical, cognitive, social and spiritual
programs. Our very active Resident Council supports a summer concert
series in our courtyard bringing in new musical entertainment each
month for patients, families and staff to enjoy. We also boast about
our hand-bell choir. You can catch them practicing weekly and feel free
to join them. Inter-generational program with mothers and young
children to singing, dancing and putting on a show occur weekly. Our
gazebo and court-yard gardens are lovingly tended by our resident
garden club. We offer pet therapy and encourage visits from our
resident’s own pets.
Holidays and traditions are well celebrated at Broomall Rehabilitation
and Nursing Center. An annual Pageant of Lights begins the festivities
each December and you’re sure to see the Easter Bunny in the spring.
Families and friends are invited to both events. Each quarter resident
events are created such as a fall Bar-B-Q in the court-yard, casino
night, an evening with Frank Sanatra, to name a few, to provide an
opportunity for families of our residents to spend special time
together with their loved one(s).
We are also very proud of our volunteers who provide invaluable and
much appreciated support and reassurance to our residents and the
recreation therapy department. Our volunteers come from schools,
religious organizations, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, veterans groups,
libraries, patient’s families and many other great organizations.
Nursing home volunteer opportunities may include spending time with
residents’ playing cards, talking, taking a walk or sharing a meal. A
group of resident volunteers who enjoy assisting with such services as
delivering the mail and feeding our tropical fish also play an
important role in our volunteer program. We welcome and encourage
suggestions for new programs or ways to improve our existing programs.
Our door is always open to new volunteers and new ideas.
Our Recreation Therapy Team
Our recreation therapy team is extremely talented; several team members
are certified music therapists and certified recreation therapists. The
team also has extensive experience and the special skills necessary to
work with people with all types of physical and cognitive disabilities.
Each therapist receives on-going education and training.
Resident Support Services/Social Services
Philosophy
The Social Services Department at Broomall Rehabilitation and
Nursing Center is dedicated to ensuring that the emotional and
psychosocial needs of patients are met and maintained on an individual
basis. Our social workers provide front-line advocacy and support for
our patients and ensure they are able to continue leading a meaningful
and dignified life.
Resident Support Services
Upon admission to Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center each
person is assigned a social worker who is responsible, along with the
interdisciplinary team, to identify emotional and psychosocial needs
and create a comprehensive care plan to address them. The department
also maintains an excellent rapport with outside community health,
welfare and social agencies and makes referrals as appropriate. The
resident’s social worker is also the first point of contact if a
concern arises that needs to be brought to the attention of facility
management. When a concern is brought to your social worker’s
attention, they will complete a written concern form and follow-up with
necessary members of the interdisciplinary team until the concern is
resolved.
Our Resident Support Team
The social service department is staffed by four compassionate social
workers who are knowledgeable of resident rights and who promote an
atmosphere which allows for privacy, dignity and the well-being of all
residents. In addition, the department utilizes a full-time discharge
planner who facilitates the discharge planning process and ensures
necessary home health services and durable medical equipment are in
place prior to discharge. The Discharge Planner also coordinates
patient/family training prior to discharge for such tasks as medication
and insulin administration, safe transferring techniques, respiratory
training, wound treatment and durable medical equipment training. Our
Discharge Planner also assists in arranging patient transportation for
discharge from the facility and contacts the patient once they have
returned to the community to ensure home services are of acceptable
quality.
Spiritual Care Program
Our Spiritual Care Program was created to ensure that all of our
resident’s spiritual and religious needs are being identified and
adequately met. Our Spiritual Care Coordinator acts as the lead liaison
and coordinator with the patient’s/family’s community of faith. The
Spiritual Care Coordinator will speak with each newly admitted patient
and conduct an assessment of the individual’s spiritual and religious
needs and advises the patient’s/family’s clergy, priest, rabbi or other
spiritual caregiver of the patient’s needs and requests. If the patient
and family do not have religious affiliation but wish to receive
spiritual or pastoral care, the Spiritual Care Coordinator provides
support in accordance with the wishes and beliefs expressed by the
patient and/or their family.
The Spiritual Care Coordinator also acts as the point person for
religious services being conducted in the facility on a regular basis.
We offer religious services from many denominations including,
Episcopal, Church of God, Roman Catholic Mass and weekly Eucharistic
visits, Seventh Day Adventist, and Jewish. We welcome all denominations
and encourage involvement in our facility from each resident’s
community of faith.
