Physician Services
Primary Care Physician (PCP) The
primary person responsible for patient care is the independent primary
care physician (PCP). The PCP is responsible for ordering necessary
tests, determining diagnoses and appropriate treatment(s), prescribing
medication and determining when patients are ready for discharge.
Choosing a PCP is among the most important health care decisions a
person must make. The individual’s PCP will be the point-person for
directing all medical and nursing care. Residents at Broomall
Rehabilitation and Nursing Center have a choice of their PCP. We have
an open panel for PCPs, so if your PCP wants to follow you to our
facility, please have them contact our Admissions Department to set up
an appointment to discuss our matriculation process for new PCPs (or
your PCP may already see other patients in our facility). If your PCP
does not wish to follow your care in the facility by making regular
rounds, one of our (2) Medical Directors would be happy to act in a
separate independent capacity as your PCP and follow your care. Both
Medical Directors have independent practices that focus on a geriatric
clientele. Following JCAHO type standards, each physician with
privileges to practice at Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
has been credentialed and reviewed by our Medical Director Quality
Assurance Committee. Simply ask the Admissions Department about your
PCP options prior to admission.
Physician Specialists
Independent physician specialists act in a consultative capacity to the
PCP, as ordered by the PCP. One advantage of receiving care at Broomall
Rehabilitation and Nursing Center is that the size of our facility
(298-beds) makes it appealing for physician specialists to practice and
make regular rounds in the facility. Contrasting smaller nursing
facilities where it may not make financial sense for specialists to
conduct regular rounds. When a resident is clinically compromised, less
trips out of the facility means less exposure to extreme weather and
less opportunities to exasperate the underlying medical condition.
Unlike our PCP panel, specialist privileges are limited. We feel by
limiting the number of specialists, we can maintain tighter control on
the quality of services being provided.
Physician Extenders
Many of the independent our physicians have physician extenders such as
nurse practitioners, physician assistants whom make rounds in the
facility on days that the physicians are not in the facility. Under the
supervision of a qualified physician, at times the facility also hosts
medical students, interns, residents and fellows. Medical students are
in medical school and participate in the care of patients as part of
their preparation to become physicians. All care provided by medical
students is closely monitored and supervised by licensed medical school
faculty. Interns are physicians who have graduated from medical school
and are in their first year of supervised experience in a hospital.
Residents are physicians who have completed an internship and are
continuing in the hospital to receive additional experience under the
tutelage of fellows and specialists.
